Why visit Thailand?
Thailand is a vibrant country known for its warm hospitality, rich history, and stunning natural beauty. From tropical islands and dense jungles to ancient temples and modern cities, Thailand offers experiences for every traveler. Its famous street food, colorful festivals, and friendly locals make it a unique destination worth visiting.
GIG Gulf's travel insurance offers medical coverage, baggage protection, trip cancellation, and COVID-19 benefits. Whether you are exploring bustling Bangkok or relaxing on the beaches of Phuket, it is important to have reliable insurance for peace of mind.
First, what’s new: What's changed at Thai immigration
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is now mandatory. Since May 2025, every foreign national entering Thailand must complete this online arrival card before landing — it replaced the old paper form. Fill it in within 72 hours of your arrival at the official government portal, tdac.immigration.go.th. It's free. Any third-party website charging a fee for it is not official — use the government site directly.
UAE passport holders' visa-free entry is currently in transition. As of the most recent check, UAE nationals can still enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days by air, with proof of onward or return travel, extendable once by a further 30 days at an immigration office inside Thailand. Thailand's Cabinet approved a rollback of this scheme on 19 May 2026 that would cut the exemption to 30 days for most nationalities, including the UAE — but as of the latest information available, this change hadn't yet been formally published and taken legal effect, so the 60-day allowance was still being honoured at the border. Given how actively this is moving, confirm the current position with the Royal Thai Embassy or Thai Immigration Bureau before you book, rather than relying on any fixed figure.
Two entry basics that apply regardless of visa status: your passport needs at least 6 months' validity from your date of entry, and you'll need proof of onward or return travel to show at immigration.
None of this replaces travel insurance — it's a separate government entry requirement that sits alongside it.
Best Time to Visit Thailand
- The ideal time to visit Thailand is during the dry season, from November to early April. This period offers pleasant weather with less rain, perfect for outdoor activities, sightseeing, and beach vacations.
- The months from May to October are the rainy season, with heavy downpours and higher humidity, which may affect travel plans.
Food to Try in Thailand
Thai cuisine is celebrated worldwide for its balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors. Here are some must-try dishes when visiting Thailand:
Getting Around in Thailand
Thailand offers various transport options depending on your destination. In cities like Bangkok, tuk-tuks and taxis are popular for short trips, while river ferries provide scenic routes along the waterways. For intercity travel, buses and trains connect major cities and towns. Domestic flights are affordable and convenient for longer distances, such as traveling from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Phuket.

Final Thoughts
Thailand rewards travellers who show up prepared — and in 2026, that means a bit more than packing sunscreen and booking a hotel. Between the mandatory digital arrival card, a visa-exemption policy that's genuinely in flux, and the everyday risk of a lost bag or a hospital visit far from home, the paperwork side of this trip matters as much as the itinerary.
None of it is complicated on its own. Complete your TDAC before you fly, confirm your current entry requirement rather than assuming last year's rules still apply, and get your travel insurance sorted before you leave the UAE. Do those three things, and the rest of the trip is exactly what it should be — temples, beaches, and street food.

Frequently asked questions
Is travel insurance mandatory for visiting Thailand?
Travel insurance isn't a condition of Thailand's visa-free entry or tourist visa process — it's not something immigration checks at the border. That said, it's strongly recommended: Thailand has excellent private hospitals, but treatment costs for foreign visitors without insurance can be significant, and a medical emergency abroad without cover falls entirely on you. A standard plan typically protects against emergency medical expenses, trip cancellation, delayed or lost baggage, and emergency evacuation.

Can I extend or buy my travel insurance while I'm already in Thailand?
No. Travel insurance needs to be purchased before you leave the UAE, and cover is structured around a trip that begins and ends in your country of residence — it isn't something you can add or extend once you've already departed. Arrange your policy before you fly, alongside your TDAC and any visa requirements.

What is the difference between single-trip and annual multi-trip travel insurance?
Single-trip travel insurance provides coverage for one specific journey and ends when that trip is completed.
Annual multi-trip travel insurance is designed for frequent travellers and can provide coverage for multiple trips taken within a 12-month period, subject to the maximum trip duration and policy terms.
If you travel several times a year, an annual multi-trip policy may be a more convenient and cost- effective option. Check our plans
